I wouldn’t respond to this since you said you don’t like talking about it, but you posted your response publicly rather than privately, so now a lot of people think I’m sexist.

tip: if people read your public words and think you are sexist, that is probably because the things you’re saying read as sexist.  it doesn’t mean they’re hating on you, it means you are espousing opinions identified as sexist. 

words to live by, no irony. as the tired-ass saying goes, intent isn’t fucking magical, and if somebody reads your words in a certain way, maybe you should reconsider the voice you use in saying them if that’s not what you mean. we can read what we say, and we can be self-reflecting.

additionally, speaking as a privileged-fuck man myself, men’s rights is bullshit and ignorant of the simple concept of that men have privilege. there is no “men’s rights” because men already fucking have rights. they have all of the rights. do you feel victimized by the societal pressures put on you? are you femme and were bullied for it? do you find yourself resentful of the macho-muscle male power ideal? that’s not men’s rights, that’s a byproduct of patriarchy and forced gender roles which in themselves, serve primarily to oppress women. if you find somebody treating you negatively for having qualities that may be feminine, it is an issue of femininity being vilified. in this case, you support feminism as an ally, because it benefits you just as fucking much, not criticizing it for not ‘focusing on men’ because guess what, men don’t need the focus, even if there can be harmful byproduct.

also, no such thing as “misandry”. misogyny is an exercise of denigrating, oppressive power towards a marginalized group. “misandry” is the anger of being victims of oppression, rape culture, systematic violence, labor inequality. if somebody ‘hates’ you for being male, tough fucking luck, some people have every right to be resentful of the role men have played in society. your recourse? check your privilege and realize that somebody can be bitter towards men and still like you as a person. i’m frequently embittered towards the able-bodied but that’s still the bulk of my friends and i can sort of separate the two things. stop taking misandry personally, neckbeards. 

as a man, chances are generally that you’re sexist. it sucks, it’s the way society grooms you, it’s the mores of the system to perpetuate itself. take moments like this and posts like softowl’s less as an attack, and more as a learning experience. reflect on yourself, see where your privilege lies, contemplate where you may have been a misogynist in your past (no man has been pure or perfect and we’re guilty of at the very least, micro-aggressions of unconscious exercises of privilege) and work against being that in the future. you don’t have to be sexist, but you need to work against that perception, and you’re not going to break it by complaining holy shit it is so fucking unfair that i have to be viewed in such a negative light for the generalized oppressions of a group that i don’t necessarily share. no, not every man is violent, but every man has privilege. you may be “hurt” by somebody wondering whether or not you’re a rapist or being wary or critical of you, but that’s a fucking product of that privilege and you don’t get rid of it by complaining about how tough it is to be a dude, you get rid of it by supporting women of all kinds in their battle to dismantle the motherfucking systems of power, marginalization, and oppression that denigrate us all, and support actual fucking equality by recognizing that you’re already on the stronger vantage point and seriously, you might as well be calling yourself a ‘white right’s activist’ if you’re so inclined to be tied up in the interests of the powerful.

At the risk of sounding like a complete asshole, there are quite a few points on this post that I disagree with.  Men’s rights are indeed an issue, and misandry does indeed exist, though the two issues are not as prevalent as their distaff counterparts.  Don’t get me wrong, I do support women’s rights, and they deserve everything men do by virtue of being members of the same species, but males have their biases/expectations/so on and so forth.  If a man wants to be less masculine, and more feminine/androgynous, but feels he can’t because of various societal pressures, is that a women’s rights issue?  I don’t believe so.  The issue here is that we’re associating certain traits with masculinity and femininity.

And what’s the deal with “privilege-checking” anyway?  Isn’t that just another way to say “your opinion doesn’t matter because of your race/sex/orientation/ability”?  Discrimination can’t be solved by discriminating back.
